How does Music Therapy work?

Music therapy is a health care profession, delivered by a qualified professional in the education context, community settings and health care services. It uses music to create engagement and emotional reflection with individuals or in a group context.

Music therapy can address different developmental issues like physical or motor, communication, social and emotional skills and sensory needs and overall, promote well-being.

In Ireland, Music Therapy follows the professional guidelines stablished by the Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapies (IACAT).

Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) is an evidence-based standardized group of techniques, based on the effect of music on the brain and the overall nervous system.

It is based on neuroscience and has a direct impact on cognitive, sensory, and motor elements caused by neurological conditions.

By stablishing a therapeutic relationship and providing a safe and supportive space and using NMT™ techniques , we aim to strengthen coping mechanisms, build resilience, increase neuroplasticity and overall brain function and foster positive emotional expression in our clients.

About me

Education and Training

Sara Dopazo,  IACAT registered music Psychotherapist.

In 2018, I completed my studies in Occupational Therapy, while also finalizing my higher studies in Music Teaching. After qualifying, I worked with people in a range of settings, with a particular focus on early intervention and adults with intellectual disabilities. During this time, I became increasingly interested in combining my background in music with my work with people and in the community.

I moved to Ireland to study Music Therapy, graduating from the MA at the University of Limerick in 2022.

Since completing my studies, I have developed my practice in psychodynamic and trauma-informed approaches. In 2025, I also completed training in Neurologic Music Therapy®.

My experience includes working with adults with intellectual disabilities, children and families, early years services and community settings. I also work on community programmes using singing and drumming to support participation, as well as health programmes within mental health services in the HSE.

Musica Moves Music Therapy starts in Limerick in 2022 with the aim of providing families and healthcare providers with an accessible service in Ireland.
